Just hours after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation, US President-elect Donald Trump reiterated his proposal to make Canada the 51st state of the United States on Monday.
Trudeau, 53, announced his resignation under pressure from his Liberal Party due to his waning popularity. General elections are scheduled for later this year. He stated he would remain in office until a new leader is elected.
Since his first term (2017-2021), Trump has had strained relations with Trudeau. Since meeting Trudeau after his electoral victory on November 5 at Mar-a-Lago, Trump has consistently promoted integrating Canada into the United States, a topic he has frequently brought up in his social media posts.
On Truth Social, Trump expressed, “Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State. The United States can no longer suffer the massive Trade Deficits and Subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this and resigned.”

Trump added, “If Canada merged with the US, there would be no Tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be TOTALLY SECURE from the threat of the Russian and Chinese Ships that are constantly surrounding them. Together, what a great Nation it would be!!!” This statement followed Trudeau’s resignation announcement.

Canadian officials have yet to respond significantly to Trump’s suggestion. Trump has also threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian imports if Toronto does not manage to curb the flow of illicit drugs and illegal migrants from its southern border with the US.
In various posts, Trump even sarcastically referred to Trudeau as the “Governor of the Great State of Canada.”
