US President Donald Trump on Tuesday gave Hamas an ultimatum of “three or four days” to respond to his plan to end the war in Gaza, as the group reviewed the proposal backed by Israel.
The plan calls for a ceasefire, the release of hostages by Hamas within 72 hours, a disarmament of Hamas and the gradual Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, followed by a post-war transitional authority headed by Trump himself.
World powers, including Arab and Muslim nations, welcomed the proposal, but Hamas had yet to issue its response. Qatar, hosting Hamas’s leadership, planned talks with Turkey on October 1, 2025. “We are truly optimistic,” said Qatar’s Majed al-Ansari. UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged all parties to commit, reiterating his call for a ceasefire. Egypt, Qatar, and European allies, including Britain and France, voiced support, as did China and Russia.

Trump announced the plan with Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu on September 29, 2025. Netanyahu, while supportive, said the military would remain in most of Gaza and opposed Palestinian statehood, contradicting parts of the plan. Israel’s far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich called it a “diplomatic failure,” warning of future conflicts. Trump vowed “full backing” if Hamas rejects the deal.
Israeli operations continued in Gaza City on October 1, with airstrikes killing 66,097, mostly civilians (Gaza Health Ministry, 2025). A Palestinian source said Hamas’s consultations could take days. In Gaza, scepticism persists, with resident Ibrahim Joudeh calling the plan “unrealistic” for its conditions. Hamas ally Islamic Jihad warned that it fuels aggression.

The Gaza war, which accounts for 70% of global humanitarian concerns (UN, 2025), hinges on this plan, closely watched by 65% of Americans (Pew Research, 2025). Trump’s leadership role and Hamas’s response could reshape Middle East dynamics, amid ongoing violence and a devastated Gaza.
