On Wednesday, former US President Donald Trump announced via his social media platform Truth Social that the United States will impose a 25% tariff on imports from India starting August 1, 2025.
Trump stated that India will also face penalties related to its purchases of Russian military equipment and Russian energy.
Trump emphasised that although India remains a friend of the US, the volume of business between the two countries has historically been limited due to India’s “far too high” tariffs—among the highest globally—and stringent non-monetary trade barriers. He described these barriers as “the most strenuous and obnoxious” of any country.
In a separate post, Trump highlighted that the US still faces a massive trade deficit with India, signalling continuing concerns over the imbalance.
This announcement follows Trump’s earlier statement on Tuesday, when he indicated that the final tariff rate on Indian imports was still under consideration. Despite several rounds of discussions over recent months, neither a mini nor an interim trade agreement has been reached between the two nations. The imposition of tariffs comes amid escalating trade tensions and reflects ongoing challenges in US-India trade relations.
