Within hours of starting his second presidential term, Donald Trump ended the use of the CBP One app, a critical pathway for illegal immigrants and asylum seekers seeking legal entry into the United States.
The CBP One app, initially utilized for commercial trucking logistics, has had its capabilities expanded by the Biden administration to include processing asylum requests.
Launched in October 2020 for trucking logistics, the app’s scope widened in January 2023 under Biden to include applications from migrants fleeing hardship. This expansion made CBP One the exclusive method for managing asylum appointments at the US-Mexico border. The app, popular for its accessibility, facilitated approximately 1,450 daily appointments, translating to around one million legal entries.
Applicants used the app’s “lottery system” to secure legal status, allowing them to live and work in the U.S. Criticized by Trump and his allies as a loophole for illegal immigration, the app’s closure was one of Trump’s first executive actions upon re-election, reflecting his commitment to stringent immigration reforms.
On his first day, Trump not only suspended the app but also declared a national emergency at the southern border, signalling upcoming severe measures, including troop deployments and potential tariffs on Mexico and Canada to combat illegal crossings. These actions underscore Trump’s fulfilment of campaign promises to rigorously enforce immigration laws, setting the stage for legal challenges from organizations like Amnesty International.
