The Trump administration has provided details on a proposed $2,000 “tariff dividend” for American citizens. According to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, the financial benefit could be distributed to most Americans, excluding high-income individuals. This would be achieved through various fiscal measures.
The clarification follows President Donald Trump’s promotion of the concept in a recent social media post. He claimed it would make the U.S. the “richest” and “most respected” country.
Secretary Bessent outlined several ways the dividend could be distributed to taxpayers. “The $2,000 dividend could come in lots of forms,” he stated in an interview. “It could be just the tax decreases that we are seeing on the president’s agenda, no tax on tips, no tax on overtime, no tax on Social Security.”

President Trump has aggressively defended his tariff policy even amid significant legal challenges. The US Supreme Court recently raised doubts about the legality of the measures. This creates a possibility that key tariffs could be overturned.
Such a ruling could force more than $100 billion in refunds. It would also remove a central pillar of the President’s second-term economic agenda. President Trump has warned that a ruling against his administration would be a “disaster.”
