Donald Trump has repeatedly proposed making Canada the “51st American state,” a notion Justin Trudeau, the Canadian Prime Minister, has consistently rejected.
Despite the ongoing rhetorical clashes with Trump, Trudeau has dispatched firefighting aid to California, experiencing severe wildfires.
On Thursday, he tweeted a video on X (formerly Twitter) showing Canadian water bombers battling the Los Angeles County wildfires, captioned, “Neighbours helping neighbours”, deliberately using British and American spellings to highlight the distinction between the two nations.

“Canada is mobilizing to help fight the wildfires in southern California. Canadian water bombers are already in action. 250 firefighters are ready to deploy,” Trudeau announced in a follow-up tweet, reassuring, “To our American neighbours: Canada’s here to help.”

Trump’s Persistent Proposal
In recent weeks, Trump has aggressively promoted his idea to incorporate Canada as the 51st state, suggesting financial strategies to bring Canada under U.S. governance. Following Trudeau’s recent resignation, Trump reiterated his merger call.
“Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State. The United States can no longer suffer the massive Trade Deficits and Subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this and resigned. If Canada merged with the U.S., there would be no Tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be TOTALLY SECURE from the threat of Russian and Chinese Ships. Together, what a great Nation it would be,” Trump stated on Truth Social.

Responding sharply, Trudeau remarked that there was “a snowball’s chance in hell” of Canada merging with the United States, adding, “Workers and communities in both our countries benefit from being each other’s biggest trading and security partner.”
Ongoing California Wildfires
The wildfire crisis in Los Angeles continues to escalate. According to CNN, the fires have claimed at least seven lives and destroyed over 10,000 structures. Driven by the fierce Santa Ana winds, the fires have prompted mass evacuations.
The Palisades Fire has devastated coastal regions, while the Eaton Fire has ravaged communities near the Angeles National Forest. Although some progress was made on January 9 as winds subsided, officials anticipate stronger gusts resuming soon.
