A tragic incident occurred in Hanumangarh, Rajasthan, when an Indian Air Force MiG-21 aircraft crashed, killing at least two civilians.
Additional Superintendent of Police Jassaram Bose provided this Information, as the news agency PTI quoted. The MiG-21 aircraft, including all its variants, is notorious for its high accident rate within the Indian Air Force.
Data released by the Defence Ministry in the past reveals that more than 170 pilots have lost their lives in accidents involving MiG-21 aircraft. This alarming number has prompted numerous investigations into the causes of these crashes.
In the period between 2010 and 2013 alone, over 20 aircraft have crashed, while from 2003 to 2013, there were 38 crashes involving the MiG-21.
Due to its high rate of accidents and the subsequent loss of life, the aircraft has been given the grim nickname “Flying Coffin.” As a result, the Indian Air Force has been working to replace the aging MiG-21 fleet with more advanced and safer aircraft to minimize future accidents and protect the lives of pilots and civilians.
