Ahead of the Emmy nominations, here’s a glimpse at the top contenders, from “The Bear” to “Shogun” and “Baby Reindeer.” These series are poised to secure multiple nominations as the television industry’s equivalent of the Oscars unveils its candidates this Wednesday.
The nominees will be announced in a live-streamed ceremony at 8:30 AM Pacific time (1530 GMT) on September 15, kicking off the final-round voting for the 76th Emmy Awards.
Shogun
“Shogun,” adapted from James Clavell’s historical novel, has captivated audiences with its depiction of 17th-century Japan through 10 critically acclaimed episodes. The series, which plans to expand with two more seasons, is a strong contender in this year’s drama categories. Pete Hammond from Deadline suggests that “Shogun” might lead due to its excellence in acting, writing, directing, and technical aspects. It faces stiff competition from “The Crown” and “The Morning Show.”
The Bear
“The Bear,” set in a tumultuous Chicago restaurant, gained significant acclaim in its first season and continues to impress with an ambitious second season. Known for its intense portrayal of kitchen dynamics and personal struggles, the show curiously competes in the comedy categories despite exploring themes like grief and addiction. It contends with shows such as “Hacks,” “Abbott Elementary,” and “Only Murders in the Building.”
Baby Reindeer
In the limited series category, “Baby Reindeer” stands out. Adapted from Richard Gadd’s dark comedy about a stalking incident, the show has become a global sensation. Despite a legal controversy involving claims from a woman alleging to be the real-life inspiration, industry experts like Hammond believe the show will still secure nominations. It competes against titles like “Fargo” and “True Detective.”
Accelerated Emmy Schedule
This year’s Emmy Awards seem to arrive sooner, with the 76th ceremony set for September 15. This is the second Emmy event in 2024, following a rescheduling due to Hollywood strikes. The upcoming awards will recognize shows aired from June 2023 to May 2024.
Tony Hale and Sheryl Lee Ralph will unveil this year’s Emmy nominations this Wednesday at 8:30 AM in Los Angeles. Following the announcement, Television Academy members will review the nominees before the final voting in mid-August.
