Following the cancellation of Taylor Swift’s Vienna concerts due to a foiled terror plot, ticket prices for her upcoming London show at Wembley Stadium have soared, with increases reaching nearly 2,000 per cent.
Originally, tickets were priced from 58 pounds for restricted views to 110 pounds for general admission. However, the surge in demand has driven prices on resale platforms such as Viagogo and StubHub to as high as 6,515 pounds for standing tickets.
The cancelled Vienna concerts, set for August 8-10, were scrapped after security agencies thwarted a planned attack by a 19-year-old affiliated with the Islamic State. The suspect had allegedly planned to drive a vehicle into the crowd and attack attendees with knives and machetes, followed by a bomb detonation; this plot aimed to target around 65,000 fans at Vienna’s Ernst-Happel-Stadion.
In light of the Vienna incident, London’s Metropolitan Police have assured enhanced security for Swift’s performances scheduled from August 15-20. The shows are expected to attract around 90,000 fans per show. Additional security measures, including walk-through metal detectors, will be implemented to ensure attendee safety.
The Metropolitan Police have stated that although there is no direct threat to the London events, they will remain vigilant and responsive to any developments. London Mayor Sadiq Khan has also confirmed the city’s readiness to host such high-profile events securely.
Following the cancellation, Barracuda Music, Swift’s concert promoter, announced that all tickets for the Vienna shows would be refunded within 10 business days. Despite the cancellations, fans have largely expressed appreciation for prioritising their safety over the continuation of the shows.
