On May 31, 2025, George R.R. Martin responded to increasing criticism regarding the delayed release of The Winds of Winter, the sixth book in his A Song of Ice and Fire series.

In a sarcastic yet passionate blog post titled “Howard Meets Hercules,” he addressed fans’ frustration while reaffirming his commitment to completing the saga.

In his blog, Martin initially discussed an animated film project based on Howard Waldrop’s A Dozen Tough Jobs before tackling fan concerns. “I will never finish Winds… I lost all interest in A Song of Ice and Fire decades ago,” he wrote, mocking critics’ claims with biting sarcasm. He added, “I’m going to die soon anyway, because I’m very old,” addressing speculation about his health and dedication, per Variety. Martin countered, “I care about [Westeros] more than you can imagine,” emphasising his love for the Starks, Lannisters, and dragons.

The George RR Martin blog post responds to years of fan impatience, with The Winds of Winter still unpublished over a decade after A Dance with Dragons. Social media buzzed, users noting, “Martin’s sarcasm is peak, but we just want the book!” The A Song of Ice and Fire saga, popularised by HBO’s Game of Thrones, remains a cultural touchstone, but delays have fueled criticism, per The Guardian.

Despite Martin’s sarcastic criticisms, Martin clarified that The Winds of Winter is a priority, though he offered no release date. His engagement with other projects, like the Hercules film, reflects his diverse creative pursuits, but his passion for Westeros endures. The Winds of Winter update reassures fans of his dedication, even as they await concrete progress.

The Winds of Winter delay continues to captivate fans, with Martin’s candid response highlighting the author’s pressure. His sarcastic defence humanises the creative process, sparking renewed discussion about A Song of Ice and Fire’s legacy and its eagerly awaited continuation.
