HBO CEO Casey Bloys has confirmed the release date for Season 3 of “The Last of Us.” In a Variety interview on July 21, 2025, he announced that the post-apocalyptic drama will return in 2027. This announcement follows show creator Craig Mazin’s statement on May 25 regarding the third season, made just before production on Season 2 wrapped up.
Bloys stated, “The series is definitely planned for 2027.” He also mentioned, “Craig is still determining whether there will be two more seasons or one extended season. It hasn’t been decided yet, and I’m following Craig’s lead on that.”
The update follows the departure of co-creator Neil Druckmann three weeks ago. On July 2, Druckmann announced through Naughty Dog: “I’ve made the difficult decision to step away from my creative involvement in The Last of Us on HBO. With season 2 now completed and before any significant work on season 3 begins, I believe this is the right time for me to focus entirely on Naughty Dog and its future projects.”

Based on the acclaimed video game, “The Last of Us” has captivated audiences with its gripping narrative of survival in a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by a zombie outbreak. Season 1 earned 24 Emmy nominations, winning eight, including technical awards. Season 2, set for 2026, will feature seven episodes and introduce new cast members like Jeffrey Wright, Isabela Merced, and Catherine O’Hara.
Bloys’ confirmation reassures fans about the show’s continuation, but Druckmann’s departure raises concerns regarding its creative direction. HBO emphasises the importance of following Mazin’s vision to uphold the series’ quality.
