The Supreme Court of Pakistan is scheduled to continue hearing the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) petition today (Monday), challenging the decision to postpone elections in Punjab.
The case will be considered by a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial at 11:30 am.
During the hearing, the ruling coalition’s lawyers are expected to raise objections to the composition of the bench, reiterating their demand that a full court be formed to decide the matter. If the bench rejects this request again, the ruling coalition plans to boycott the proceedings.
On Saturday, the ruling alliance convened a meeting in which they expressed a lack of confidence in the three-judge bench, comprising CJP Bandial, Justice Ijazul Ahsan, and Justice Muneeb Akhtar.
The ruling coalition resolved not to accept any decision issued by this bench. However, following the meeting, the nation’s top security official indicated that the incumbent coalition government might consider filing references against the three Supreme Court judges involved.
This situation highlights the tensions between the ruling coalition and the judiciary and the political implications of the postponed elections in Punjab. With the ruling coalition expressing distrust in the three-judge bench and demanding a full court, the case’s outcome and potential impact on the political landscape remain uncertain.
