The Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court has dismissed a PTI plea to take suo motu notice of deaths during the party’s violent protest.
Headed by Justice Amin-ud-Din Khan, the five-member bench was initially hearing a case about the Climate Change Authority. During the session, Justice Khan noted that the court could only address issues formally presented.
Amid the hearing, via video link, the Additional Advocate General of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa voiced concerns about the protests in Islamabad’s Blue Area and the subsequent large-scale operation. He mentioned fatalities on both sides and asked the bench to consider a suo motu action.
Justice Aminuddin Khan responded, stating that the issue was not currently before the court and could not be addressed.
Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhel concurred, emphasizing their unwillingness to discuss the matter. Justice Musarrat Hilali cautioned the K-P government’s lawyer against bringing political issues to the Supreme Court.
In a separate case, the Supreme Court concluded a petition initiated by the PTI founder concerning the integration of FATA into K-P. Lawyer Babar Awan noted that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Provincial Assembly had resolved the matter, rendering no further judicial intervention necessary.
Recent clashes between security forces and PTI protesters in Islamabad resulted in 10 deaths and 71 injuries, according to reports from three major hospitals.
