The Supreme Court of Pakistan has mandated the publication of suspect sketches concerning attacks on journalists in national newspapers during a session addressing the harassment and assaults journalists face, presided over by a three-member bench led by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa.
In an unexpected turn during the hearing, individuals from Chakwal present in the courtroom disavowed any involvement with the filing of the petition, prompting Chief Justice Isa to recommend they pursue legal action against those who misused their identities without authorization.
Amidst discussions, M. Asif, one of the applicants, expressed his willingness to file an FIR, seeking the court’s endorsement. Chief Justice Isa, challenging the expectation of court sponsorship in personal legal actions, underscored the judiciary’s independent role.
Chief Justice Isa also voiced his concerns over the public’s criticism of the judiciary: “Mistakes are only made by Supreme Court judges. Just because we do nothing does not mean we should throw stones. We are lectured on TV about how courts should be run. First, they bombard us, then appear before us, saying there’s no case to proceed with. Everyone is playing their part in destroying the country. Why are you afraid of speaking the truth? Here, no one even apologizes for spreading false information.”
Further, the court set a stringent timeline for resolving these cases, ordering the Islamabad Police to investigate the attacks within 30 days. Additionally, to expedite the capture of those responsible for the assault on journalist Asad Toor, the court decreed that sketches of the suspects be published. It announced a reward for information leading to their arrest.
