Steven Gerrard, former Liverpool legend, has accepted the head coach position at Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq, which has caught the attention of football enthusiasts worldwide.

Steven Gerrard, who distanced himself from the role earlier, confirmed the decision through a Twitter post by Al-Ettifaq, stating, “Where legends are found. We’re thrilled to announce Steven Gerrard is our new head coach.” This shift illustrates Gerrard’s willingness to explore new opportunities and adds his name to the growing list of high-profile football personalities gravitating towards Saudi Arabia.

Al-Ettifaq, under Antonio Cazorla’s tutelage, secured the seventh spot in the league last season. The team hopes to climb higher in the rankings with Gerrard’s inclusion.

The Saudi Pro League sees improved standards, largely due to the involvement of the country’s Public Investment Fund, which has taken over four clubs (excluding Al-Ettifaq). The quality influx has significantly boosted the excitement and competitiveness of Saudi Arabian football.

Gerrard’s Journey and The Rising Appeal of Saudi Pro League

In 2018, Gerrard ventured into coaching with Rangers after retiring from a successful playing career. His tenure led the club to a Scottish Premiership victory in the 2020-21 season. However, his stint at Aston Villa, which started promisingly in November of the same year, was marked by inconsistent results, leading to his dismissal. Gerrard’s move to Al-Ettifaq presents a fresh opportunity to influence the rapidly evolving Saudi Pro League.

Joining Al-Ettifaq means Gerrard will cross paths with other notable figures, such as Cristiano Ronaldo at Al Nassr and Karim Benzema at Al Ittihad. The arrival of Marcelo Brozovic from Internazionale to Al-Nassr further underlines the league’s allure. As Saudi Arabia’s domestic league continues to advance, the arrival of such high-profile talent underlines its global ambition to elevate the league’s profile and competitiveness.
