The International Cricket Council (ICC) has reinstated Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) after a two-month suspension. SLC faced a ban on 10 November 2023 for failing to comply with ICC’s autonomy and non-government interference requirements in cricket governance.
In a recent statement, the ICC announced that Sri Lanka can resume international competitions, including bilateral cricket and ICC events. However, the U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup was relocated to South Africa, initially planned in Sri Lanka.
Since the suspension, the ICC Board has closely monitored the situation. They are now convinced that SLC is meeting membership obligations.
It’s important to note that the ban followed a day after Sri Lanka’s parliament demanded the board’s resignation. Sports minister Roshan Ranasinghe accused the board of financial misappropriation.
Following a significant loss to India in the World Cup, Ranasinghe dismissed the SLC board on 6 November, citing corruption allegations. The Court of Appeal, however, reinstated the board the next day.
Shammi Silva, the ousted SLC President, challenged his dismissal in court. He obtained a two-week stay pending a full hearing.
