Spotify has introduced a new artificial intelligence feature called Prompted Playlist, expanding its personalised listening tools for premium users in the United States and Canada.
The feature allows subscribers to build and refine playlists using natural-language prompts, giving them direct control over how the platform curates their music. Listeners can guide the algorithm using specific instructions based on mood, activity, genre, or era.
Spotify previously tested the tool in New Zealand, where early adoption proved successful. The North American rollout marks the latest step in Spotify’s broader push to integrate AI-driven personalisation across its platform.
Unlike traditional recommendation systems, Prompted Playlist turns users into active decision-makers rather than passive recipients of algorithmic suggestions. The system responds to user intent and continuously adapts to their listening habits.
Spotify said users can also set custom rules for how playlists evolve. Options include daily or weekly refreshes to ensure music selections stay current and relevant.
Molly Holder, Spotify’s Vice President of Product Personalisation, said listeners want more influence over how the platform understands them.
She explained that users increasingly expect to shape their experience rather than rely solely on automated recommendations.
The launch follows Spotify’s recent decision to raise its premium subscription price in several markets. Beginning in February, the monthly plan will increase by $1 to $12.99 in the United States, Estonia, and Latvia.
Spotify continues to position AI-powered tools as a key strategy to encourage free users to upgrade, while enhancing engagement among existing subscribers.
