A declassified CIA document from the Cold War era has reignited interest in UFOs, detailing a supposed encounter with a flying saucer involving Soviet soldiers in Ukraine between 1989 and 1990.

Released in 2000 and recently popularized online, a 250-page KGB report claims that extraterrestrials turned 23 soldiers to stone after their platoon attacked a UFO. While the story captivates enthusiasts, experts urge caution and highlight uncertainties regarding its accuracy.

The report, obtained by the CIA after the Soviet Union’s 1991 collapse, describes a Soviet training exercise interrupted by a “low-flying saucer.” A soldier fired a missile, downing the craft. Five humanoids with “large heads and black eyes” emerged, merging into a glowing sphere that exploded, petrifying 23 soldiers into a limestone-like substance. Two soldiers in the shade survived. The KGB allegedly moved the remains and wreckage to a secret Moscow base.

Scientific Claims and Skepticism

Soviet scientists reportedly found an unknown light source had altered the soldiers’ cells, resembling limestone. The CIA noted, “If true, this suggests aliens possess advanced technology.” However, former CIA agent Mike Baker, speaking to Fox News, questioned the report’s reliability, suggesting it may have been distorted over time. The story’s origins in Canadian Weekly World News and Holos Ukrayiny add to doubts about its authenticity.

The tale has fueled UFO discussions, appearing on The Joe Rogan Experience and circulating online. Available via the CIA’s Freedom of Information Act Electronic Reading Room, it’s part of a broader collection of UFO files. Despite scepticism, its vivid details, backed by alleged eyewitness accounts and images, keep it alive among enthusiasts.
