On Monday, a massive sinkhole suddenly emerged on a Johar Town main road, swallowing three vehicles and causing significant traffic disruptions.
The incident involved a car and two motorcycles falling into the sinkhole, prompting local residents to use a ladder to assist the trapped commuters. A video capturing this act of community help circulated widely on social media.
Officials from the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) attributed the formation of the sinkhole to an underground leakage from a sewer line.
In response, Lahore’s Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) implemented a traffic diversion from Main Boulevard Johar Town, exacerbating traffic congestion. A traffic response unit was deployed, and relevant departments were notified to manage the situation.
Over the past three years, Lahore has seen multiple road fissures during the monsoon season. This recent event marks the fourth such sinkhole on this road in recent months.
Additionally, the record rainfall in Lahore this past August led to several sinkholes, including one on Khayaban-i-Firdausi in Johar Town, where an old trunk sewer failed due to the excessive rainwater flow and drainage.
