Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori has warned police about rising street crime in Karachi.
Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori gave a deadline of 48 hours to SHOs and DIGs to combat street crime in Karachi and instructed police officers to patrol all of Karachi.
He promised to monitor street crime in Karachi personally.
He stated he’ll personally monitor the Karachi crime reports daily and question the SHO based on the street crime location. Tessori further added that those found guilty will be punished.
The governor also asked the Inspector General of Sindh to restrict police officers’ street crime-fighting tasks.
Karachi’s Crime Statistics in 2022
The police reported around 81,000 street crimes in Karachi in 2022.
52,000 motorcycles and 26,400 mobile phones, and 2,000 cars were stolen.
The data revealed the police department’s dismal record in reducing crime and retrieving stolen property. Only 4,000 stolen items, including 2,900 motorcycles, 600 automobiles, and 530 phones, were recovered.
In February 2022, 11,000 street offenses were reported in Karachi. Thirteen people died while resisting robberies and gun attacks, including police officers and a journalist.
The first 1.5 months of 2022 had 11,000 dacoities. Over 80 people were harmed in the port city while resisting a robbery.
From January 1 to February 17, 3,845 phones, 672 motorcycles, and 20 automobiles were stolen in Karachi. Criminals stole more than automobiles and motorcycles.
According to police, 6,087 motorbikes and 296 automobiles were taken.
