On August 4, 2025, the Sindh Excise and Taxation Department announced an extension for replacing old vehicle number plates with new Ajrak-themed plates featuring enhanced security features.
The new deadline for the Ajrak-themed number plate is now set for October 31, instead of the initial date of August 14. The extension, specifically for two-wheelers (motorcycles), was granted following directives from Sindh Minister for Excise, Taxation & Narcotics Control, Mukesh Kumar Chawla.
The requirement to replace vehicle number plates has created considerable inconvenience for residents of Karachi. This has led to fines, vehicle seizures, and widespread frustration. The Excise Department is currently facing a backlog due to a surge in applications and insufficient infrastructure, resulting in significant delays.

Additionally, the traffic police have stepped up enforcement efforts, issuing fines amounting to millions and seizing numerous vehicles for non-compliance, which has further heightened public discontent.
The new number plates, priced at Rs 1,850 for motorcycles and Rs 2,450 for cars, have drawn criticism from citizens who argue that they should not have to pay again after their initial registration. Many have called for city-wide registration camps and a systematic process to address delays and curb alleged police overreach.
