On January 11, the Sindh government will launch the initial section of the Malir Expressway, a modern high-speed corridor.
The initial 9.1 km stretch from Korangi Causeway to Shah Faisal marks a significant improvement in Karachi’s infrastructure, designed to enhance connectivity and alleviate traffic congestion.
The decision to open this segment came from a high-level meeting led by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, who recently reviewed the project’s final progress. Key figures, including the Minister for Local Government Saeed Ghani, Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah, and Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, attended the meeting.

The Malir Expressway, the largest Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project in Sindh, features a three-lane dual-carriageway with modern, access-controlled infrastructure. It extends approximately 40 km, connecting Korangi Creek Avenue (DHA) with the M-9 Motorway (Superhighway) near Kathore. This route is crucial for reducing commuters’ travel times and facilitating smoother traffic flow between major city points.
The newly opened segment includes a ramp for immediate traffic integration and will soon benefit from a connecting flyover from Korangi, expected to complete within the next two months. Ongoing infrastructure developments include the construction of the Jam Sadiq Interchange and road rehabilitation at the EBM and Shah Faisal Interchanges. The Quaidabad Interchange has also improved recently after the removal of encroachments.

Officials have set up a toll plaza to manage traffic flow, charging Rs100 for cars and jeeps and Rs200 for heavy vehicles. To ensure safety and smooth operations, comprehensive security measures are in place, including continuous patrols by traffic police and the presence of fire brigades and Rescue 1122 ambulances. The Chief Minister has instructed law enforcement to ensure a strong presence at key junctions such as the Jam Sadiq, EBM, and Shah Faisal Interchanges.
Officials have declared the stretch from Shah Faisal Interchange to Shah Faisal Colony Bridge a no-parking zone to regulate traffic further. The expressway will accommodate commercial vehicles, cars, jeeps, and buses while prohibiting motorcycles and rickshaws to maintain safety and order on this new route.
