On Sunday, April 27, 2025, Senior Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced that the dispute regarding the contentious six-canals project has been fully resolved under the leadership of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
Memon praised Bilawal’s “tireless efforts and effective strategy,” stating the issue will be formally closed at the Council of Common Interests (CCI) meeting on May 2.
Memon urged political parties and lawyers to end the road blockades caused by ongoing protests, emphasising the negative economic impact on goods transport, farmers, and the general public. He stated, “The closure of highways has severely affected livestock and imports and exports, particularly harming the poor.”
He called for immediate action to restore traffic flow and suggested that protests remain peaceful while ensuring roads are cleared to help normalise public life.

The statement comes in the wake of violent clashes in Gulshan-i-Hadeed, Karachi, where six individuals, including a lawyer, were injured during a police effort to disperse a five-day sit-in protesting the canals project.
Protests have continued, including a 10-day sit-in at Babarloi in Khairpur and a strike organised by Jamaat-i-Islami, despite the government’s decision to pause the project until there is consensus from the Council of Common Interests (CCI). Memon expressed the Sindh government’s willingness to negotiate with stakeholders and emphasised the importance of collective decision-making.
