Japan’s Shoma Uno overcame mental and physical obstacles to retain his world figure skating title in front of a passionate home crowd on Saturday. Despite twisting his ankle during practice one week prior and injuring it again before the short program, Uno delivered a stunning performance, earning an overall score of 301.14 and besting American teenager Ilia Malinin and South Korea’s Cha Jun-hwan.
Competing, Uno was filled with anxiety about his jumps, but he could surpass his expectations and prove his championship caliber. Despite the absence of Olympic champion Nathan Chen, who is taking a break from competition, and banned Russian skaters, the competition was filled with thrilling performances, including Malinin’s successful landing of the quadruple axel, making him the first skater ever to achieve this feat at a world championship.
Uno’s victory gave Japan its third gold medal, following Kaori Sakamoto’s retention of her women’s title and Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara’s win in the pairs event. Uno’s routine was challenging as he stumbled on an early jump. Still, he delivered the rest of his program with smooth precision, earning him the title and bringing tears to his eyes as he collapsed on the ice after finishing.
In the ice dance competition, American duo Madison Chock and Evan Bates also returned triumphantly, earning their first world title after a fall in the free dance. Chock and Bates, engaged to be married, showed perseverance and determination, finishing with 226.01 points overall and beating Italy’s Charlene Guignard, Marco Fabbri, Canada’s Piper Gilles, and Paul Poirier.
Overall, the world figure skating championships were filled with excitement and drama, as skaters worldwide brought their best to the ice and delivered unforgettable performances.
