Brigadier General Shariful M. Khan, born in Bangladesh, has been named Director of Staff for the Pentagon’s Golden Dome missile defence initiative. This program aims to develop advanced missile defence systems similar to Israel’s Iron Dome.
Khan will oversee strategy, policymaking, and partnerships with industry, universities, and government agencies. His work will help protect the U.S. and its allies with cutting-edge defence technologies.
A 1997 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, Khan has extensive experience in space systems and security missions. He previously commanded the 379th Space Range Squadron and the 310th Space Wing in Colorado, leading 1,500 personnel.

Khan also served in the Middle East during Operation Silent Sentry in 2007. He holds key Pentagon and U.S. Space Force leadership roles. His awards include the Legion of Merit and the Defence Meritorious Service Medal.
Khan’s appointment is historic as he is the first Bangladeshi-born Muslim to lead a major Pentagon program. This reflects growing diversity and inclusion in U.S. national security leadership.
