On August 30, 2025, an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Lahore placed Shahrez Khan, the nephew of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, under judicial remand due to his alleged involvement in the Jinnah House attack during the riots on May 9, 2023. Shahrez, who is the son of Imran’s sister, Aleema Khan, was arrested on August 21, 2025, along with his brother, Shershah, in connection with the same case.
Lahore police presented Shahrez before an ATC Judge, Manzer Ali Gill, after his physical remand ended. The prosecution requested an extension for further investigation. However, Judge Gill rejected the plea and ordered judicial remand. Shahrez now faces the possibility of detention as the case progresses. His brother, Shershah, who was also implicated, was sent to judicial remand on August 28, 2025, in the same case.

The May 9, 2023, riots erupted across Pakistan following the arrest of Imran Khan on corruption charges. Protesters, including PTI supporters, attacked military and state installations, with the Jinnah House attack in Lahore a high-profile assault on the corps commander’s residence, standing out. Shahrez and Shershah face charges of arson, vandalism, torching a police van, and running an anti-state digital campaign.
Allegations Against Shahrez and Shershah
Sources indicate that Shershah was present with another nephew, Hassan Niazi, during the Jinnah House attack. He allegedly went into hiding afterwards and fled to London for nearly two years before his arrest. Both brothers are accused of orchestrating anti-state activities alongside their involvement in the violent protests. The charges reflect the government’s broader crackdown on PTI following the riots.

The judicial remand of Shahrez Khan has heightened scrutiny of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and its leadership. The case has drawn criticism, with Amnesty International describing the arrests of Shahrez and Shershah as a “political witch-hunt.” PTI asserts that the charges against them are fabricated, a claim supported by Shahrez’s wife, who stated that he was in Chitral on May 9, 2023.
