The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced the national cricket team’s lineup for the T20 series against New Zealand. The series, part of the cricket calendar of January next year, is pivotal as it marks a strategic shift in the team’s leadership and composition.
The announcement headline is the appointment of Shaheen Afridi as the captain of the T20I side, a role previously held by Babar Azam.
The squad chosen for the series is a mix of experience and youth. It includes young players like Abbas Afridi, Saim Ayub, Haseebullah Khan, and Sahibzada Farhan, who are expected to bring fresh energy and perspectives to the team. Additionally, the squad features established players such as Azam Khan, known for his aggressive batting style, Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam, and Mohammad Rizwan, who have consistently performed for Pakistan in the T20 format.
PCB official Riaz shed light on the selection strategy during a press conference. He mentioned the need for impactful players in the middle order, indicating a shift towards a more aggressive and dynamic batting lineup. The selection also addresses the need to fill gaps, particularly in positions 4-7, where players like Khushdil Shah and Asif Ali previously had opportunities but couldn’t make a significant impact.
Managing Player Absences
The squad has been selected considering the absence of key players like wicketkeeper Mohammad Haris, who has been rested for this series, and all-rounder Shadab Khan, who is recovering from an ankle injury. These absences are crucial as they open opportunities for other players to step up and showcase their skills at the international level.
The series against New Zealand is set to be challenging, with the matches spread across various cities. The first match will be played in Auckland on January 12, followed by games in Hamilton and Dunedin and two matches in Christchurch. This tour will test the new squad’s adaptability to different conditions and their ability to perform under the leadership of Shaheen Afridi.t.
