Abdullah Shafique becomes the first Pakistani Batsman to Achieve a Century on Their Cricket World Cup Debut at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium during Pakistan’s face-off against Sri Lanka in the World Cup 2023.
Shafique brilliantly carved out 115 runs off 103 balls, impressively striking 10 boundaries and launching three balls over the fence. His performance showcased his talent and resilience, especially when the team needed it the most, with early dismissals of stalwarts Babar Azam and Imam-ul-Haq.
Partnership with Rizwan and Setting a New Record
Mohammad Rizwan rose to the occasion alongside Shafique, contributing a significant half-century. Together, they steadied Pakistan’s innings. However, Shafique’s outstanding innings were eventually halted by Matheesha Pathirana in the 34th over. With this knock, Shafique etched his name in the record books, becoming the first Pakistani batter to score a century in a World Cup match held in India.
