A man sought for the alleged murder of his daughter, an 18-year-old Pakistani-Italian named Saman Abbas, was recently apprehended and is now being extradited to Italy to face trial for his actions.
In April 2021, Saman went missing. Her disappearance came after she refused to comply with her family’s wishes to return to Pakistan for an arranged marriage.
Italian investigators embarked on a prolonged search for the teenager, eventually finding human remains near the Abbas family’s residence in the northern Italian town of Novellara. Subsequent identification procedures using dental records confirmed the tragic end Saman had met.
Family’s Role in the Tragedy
The case grows darker with allegations suggesting the family’s outrage upon discovering that Saman had an Italian boyfriend. Prosecutors argue that this anger might have been the tipping point, resulting in her murder when she ventured back home to gather some documents after having stayed for a period under the care of social services.
Carlo Nordio, the Italian justice minister, vocalized his thoughts on this heart-wrenching case. In his statement, he deemed the arrest and extradition of Shabbar Abbas, Saman’s father, a “significant progression to ensure that justice is duly served for a horrendous crime.” Despite the mounting evidence, Abbas remains in denial, refusing to admit his daughter’s demise.
Moreover, the intricate web of this case doesn’t end with the father. Saman’s uncle, initially in France, has already been deported to Italy to answer for the crimes he’s implicated in. Two of Saman’s cousins are also set to face the legal system regarding their roles in this tragic incident.
