In a revealing interview with Interview magazine, Selena Gomez and her fiancé, Benny Blanco, shared how their relationship blossomed with a little help from Selena’s mother, Mandy Teefey.
The singer-actress credits her mother with playing a pivotal role in connecting her with Blanco and setting the stage for their future engagement.
During their first joint media appearance, the couple opened up about the beginnings of their relationship. “I was around 16, 17 when I first met Benny,” Selena disclosed. The engagement, announced in December 2024, culminated in a connection that began years earlier, initially professional and centred around their music careers.

As reported by ‘People’ magazine, Blanco revealed that Selena’s mother orchestrated their first meeting to discuss potential musical collaborations. “Her mom set up a meeting between the two of us. This was right when I became big, and she wasn’t a singer yet,” Blanco said. The couple’s first collaborative track was released in 2013, marking the start of their creative partnership.

Mandy Teefey and Selena’s stepfather, Brian Teefey, managed Selena’s career during her formative years on the Disney Channel. Blanco reminisced about those early days, saying, “When she started putting out music, I was so into it. I feel like she was the original sad girl. Everyone was like (beatboxes), and she was like, (sings) ‘I just want to look good for you’. I was drawn to it.”
The personal connection deepened when the two worked together in the studio. Selena explained, “It was really simple. We got in the studio to work on a son,g and we just talked; that’s how easy it was for me. I liked him before he liked me.” This initial chemistry through music laid the foundation for their romantic relationship.
