Mumtaz Qadri, the cold blooded self confessed murderer of  Punjab Governor Salman Taseer was finally executed in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail today morning, jail and Punjab police have confirmed.

Qadri was hanged after President Mamnoon Hussain dismissed his clemency appeal.

Qadri was awarded the death sentence by an Anti-Terrorism court for killing Salman Taseer in Islamabad in January 2011.

The Supreme Court had also upheld the death sentence in October last.

The jail authorities arranged meeting of Mumtaz Qadri with his family and later the dead body was handed over to his family members.

Qadri was hanged at around 4:30 a.m.

Protests broke out within hours by supporters of Mumtaz Qadri, who consider him a hero.

Protests erupted in several areas of Rawalpindi and the capital over an hour after the news of the execution spread.

Dozens of Rangers and police in riot gear as well as ambulances were stationed outside Qadri’s home in the city early Monday, an AFP reporter there said.

Protesters torched tyres against Qadri’s execution in Hyderabad.
