Ryan Steven Lochte, the third-most decorated swimmer in Olympic history, has shared the personal reasons for his decision to sell his Olympic gold medals.
After announcing the auction on December 10, 2025, the 41-year-old Olympian addressed fans through an Instagram post. He clarified that medals were never his primary motivation. “I never swam for the gold medals,” Lochte wrote. “My passion was always to become one of the best swimmers in the world.”
He described the medals as a symbol of a much larger journey rather than the goal itself. According to Lochte, the real value lies in the years of discipline, sacrifice, and personal growth that shaped his career. “The medals were just a cherry on top of an incredible journey,” he added.
Lochte also explained that he rarely kept his medals. Over the years, he gave many of them to fans, children in the stands, and young swimmers who looked up to him. He said his purpose has always extended beyond personal success.
“It’s never been just about me,” he noted. “I want to inspire the next generation and help them chase their dreams.”
One of the most accomplished athletes in American swimming history, Lochte earned six Olympic gold medals across four Olympic Games. He has decided to sell three of those gold medals through Goldin Auctions.
Throughout his career, Lochte collected more than 90 international medals from the Olympics, FINA World Championships, Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, and the Pan American Games. He believes those achievements represent effort, memories, and resilience rather than objects kept on display. For Lochte, the journey remains the true prize, long after the medals leave his possession.
