Several dozen people gathered on Sunday in the Siberian city of Tomsk to protest Russia’s ban on the US-based children’s gaming platform Roblox, marking a rare instance of public dissent amid strict wartime censorship.
The demonstration took place in Vladimir Vysotsky Park, around 2,900 kilometres east of Moscow, where protesters braved freezing conditions to voice opposition to the ban.
Photographs shared by protest organisers showed about 25 people holding hand-drawn placards with messages such as “Hands off Roblox” and “Roblox is the victim of the digital Iron Curtain.” Another sign criticised the government’s approach, reading: “Bans and blocks are all you are able to do.”
Public protests remain uncommon in Russia, particularly since the start of the war in Ukraine, due to tight restrictions on freedom of expression and assembly.
Why Russia Blocked Roblox
Russia’s communications watchdog, Roskomnadzor, announced on December 3 that it had blocked Roblox, citing inappropriate content that could harm children’s moral and spiritual development.

The decision placed Roblox alongside several other restricted or blocked platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp, and YouTube, as part of Russia’s broader censorship framework.
The Roblox ban has sparked broader discussion in Russia about digital censorship, child safety, and limits on enforcement in an increasingly connected world.
Many users bypass platform restrictions using virtual private networks (VPNs), prompting some parents and students to question the logic of bans that can be easily circumvented. Others have asked why domestic alternatives fail to replace popular foreign platforms.
At the same time, some parents and teachers support the decision, arguing that Roblox enables exposure to sexual content and allows children to communicate with unknown adults.
International Context and Roblox’s Response
Roblox, headquartered in San Mateo, California, has faced bans in other countries, including Iraq and Turkey, over concerns that predators could exploit the platform to target minors.
When Russia announced the ban, Roblox said it maintains a “deep commitment to safety” and employs robust safeguards to protect young users. The company did not issue additional comments following the Tomsk protest.
Russian officials argue that censorship is necessary to counter what they describe as a Western-led information war and to protect traditional Russian values from foreign cultural influence.
Despite these claims, the protest in Tomsk suggests rising public frustration over digital restrictions, particularly those affecting children and everyday online life.
