Russell Wilson is set to join the Pittsburgh Steelers, a move that comes at no cost to the team. After releasing Wilson after two unimpressive seasons, the Denver Broncos remain responsible for $38 million of his salary.
As reported by Adam Schefter from ESPN, Wilson, 35, a former Super Bowl champion and nine-time Pro Bowl quarterback, was released by the Broncos, where he failed to connect with head coach Sean Payton.
Schefter’s tweet highlighted Wilson’s intention to ink a one-year, team-friendly contract with the Steelers. In this arrangement, the Broncos cover $38 million of his earnings, and Wilson will wear the black and yellow.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin faces a quarterback conundrum, oscillating between Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph. Wilson’s arrival could complicate the decision further.
Wilson boasts a flawless record against Tomlin’s Steelers from his tenure with the Seattle Seahawks, achieving two victories. Across these matches, he amassed 645 yards and eight touchdowns with no interceptions, making him an attractive addition at the veteran minimum.
Wilson’s presence is expected to guide the younger quarterbacks and perhaps rejuvenate his career with one of the NFL’s storied franchises.
