Robert Hadden, a once-reputed gynaecologist, will spend the next 20 years behind bars, having been found guilty of sexually exploiting over 200 patients.
Robert Hadden’s heinous crimes were committed in high-profile New York healthcare facilities over two decades.
The presiding federal judge described Hadden’s actions as shockingly depraved, demonstrating a horrific level of sexual abuse. His victims, many of whom were expectant mothers or battling physical ailments, had put their trust in Hadden, only to be left with lasting emotional and physical wounds from his vile acts.
During his sentencing, Hadden offered an apology, expressing remorse for the pain he inflicted. However, this sentiment was met with scepticism from his victims. Liz Hall, a survivor, dismissed his regret as insincere, accusing Hadden of displaying no true remorse or empathy.
From Public Outrage to Legal Triumph: The Fight for Justice
Hadden’s case rose to prominence in the wake of the #MeToo movement in 2017, as survivors began to vocalize their experiences. Yet, earlier attempts at justice fell flat when a plea deal shielded Hadden from incarceration and kept him off the state’s sex offender registry.
The tide turned in 2020 when federal prosecutors picked up the case. Hadden was charged with enticing women to cross state lines to sexually abuse them. Nine brave survivors stood witness against Hadden during the trial, sharing harrowing accounts of their experiences under his care at institutions like Columbia University Irving Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.
This legal battle prompted amendments to New York law, enabling survivors of sexual abuse to seek legal recourse beyond the statute of limitations. In the wake of these changes, the hospitals associated with Hadden agreed to a whopping $236 million settlement to resolve civil claims filed by over 200 former patients.
In a revelatory confession, survivor Dian Monson shared that her initial report of Hadden’s abuse to Columbia in 1994 was ignored, pointing to institutional negligence until the recent exposure of his crimes.
This sentencing marks a significant victory for the brave survivors who finally witnessed their abuser being held accountable. Moreover, it underscores the necessity of collective action in identifying and preventing such egregious crimes in the future.
