A retired major of the Pakistan Army was shot to death in Karachi’s Defence Housing Authority (DHA) neighbourhood earlier today in an attack claimed by the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
According to police sources, unidentified men riding a motorbike shot dead Ali Raza, a former army major, in DHA’s Phase 1 today morning.
The body of the deceased was shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC).
AIG Karachi Mushtaq Ahmed Mahar had earlier told Dawn that police is probing whether the incident was an act of targeted or sectarian killing.
Karachi, a city of around 20 million people and Pakistan’s financial capital has been racked in recent years by criminal, ethnic, political and religious violence.
Paramilitary force Rangers is currently leading a security operation in the city, which was initiated back in September 2013 after the federal cabinet empowered Rangers to lead a targeted advance with the support of police against criminals already identified by law enforcement agencies for their alleged involvement in targeted killings, kidnappings for ransom, extortion and terrorism in Karachi.
