“Wicked Part 2” is slated for a US release on November 21, 2025. Universal Pictures originally considered November 26 or December 25 for the sequel’s release but adjusted the date to avoid clashing with “Zootopia 2” and “Avatar: Fire and Ash.”
The film, directed by John M. Chu and featuring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, wrapped up principal photography in July 2022. Despite a temporary halt due to the SAG-AFTRA strike in July 2023, filming resumed in January 2024, and the movie is now in post-production.
“Wicked,” which debuted to impressive numbers, grossing $19.2 million in US previews, is poised to be a major box office hit, potentially earning up to $130 million in its opening week. This performance is expected to mirror the success of last year’s fantasy musical “Barbie.”
Chu, along with producers Marc Platt and David Stone, decided early on to split the adaptation of the popular Broadway musical into two parts. This strategy aims to honour the original material and allows for a deeper exploration of the characters and the world of Oz.
Erivo and Grande will reprise their roles as Elphaba and Galinda, now “Glinda the Good.” The sequel picks up with Elphaba grappling with her reputation as the “Wicked Witch of the West” and Galinda tasked with protecting Oz.
While unconfirmed, Chu plans to incorporate numerous musical numbers from the Broadway show and has announced the inclusion of specific scenes from the book, heightening anticipation among fans and the media.
