Social media platforms Reddit and X experienced service disruptions on Thursday, preventing thousands of users from accessing key features.
According to data from Downdetector, reports of outages began spiking around 3 p.m. ET, with problems persisting for several hours across both platforms.
The disruptions affected core functionality for users worldwide. On Reddit, many reported being unable to load posts, access subreddits, or log into their accounts. X users faced similar challenges, with widespread complaints about timeline loading failures, posting difficulties, and direct messaging problems. At the peak of the outages, Downdetector recorded over 30,000 reports for Reddit and over 15,000 for X.

Neither company has officially explained the service disruptions or indicated whether the simultaneous outages were related. The lack of communication from both platforms has frustrated users who rely on these services for news, community engagement, and professional networking. Digital infrastructure experts note this is another incident in a growing pattern of tech service instability, just months after major outages affected Meta and Microsoft services earlier this year.
The timing and scale of the disruptions have raised questions about the reliability of major social platforms as they become increasingly central to digital communication. Some users reported temporary workarounds by switching networks or clearing caches, while others migrated to alternative platforms like Bluesky and Discord.
Hashtags, including #RedditDown and #XOutage, trended on other social channels as users sought information and shared their experiences.
