Kylian Mbappe scored twice to lead Real Madrid to a confident 3-0 victory over newly promoted Real Oviedo in La Liga on Sunday. Vinicius Junior added a late third goal to secure the points for the reigning champions.
The match was a historic occasion for Oviedo, returning to Spain’s top flight after a 24-year absence. Their fans created a vibrant atmosphere for the visit of the 15-time European champions.
Madrid coach Xabi Alonso made strategic changes to his starting lineup from their opening win. He dropped Vinicius Junior and Trent Alexander-Arnold, bringing in Rodrygo Goes and the returning captain Dani Carvajal. The decision paid dividends. Vinicius, introduced as a second-half substitute, responded with a goal and an assist in an impactful 30-minute cameo.

Coach Alonso praised the team’s complete performance. “It was a very serious, very complete game with and without the ball,” he stated. “Vini came on and had a role in those two goals that gave us peace of mind. There will be games for everyone.”
The breakthrough came in the 37th minute. Arda Guler drilled a pass into Mbappe, who turned and fired a low shot past goalkeeper Aaron Escandell. The goal followed furious Oviedo protests over a challenge in the build-up. Oviedo fought hard and nearly equalised late on. Substitute Kwasi Sibo struck the post with a powerful effort that left goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois stranded.
That scare ignited Madrid’s attack. Vinicius won the ball and drove forward before slipping a precise pass to Mbappe, who slotted home his second goal in the 83rd minute. The Brazilian forward then sealed the victory himself in the 93rd minute, finishing calmly after a pass from Brahim Diaz.
In other La Liga matches, Villarreal dominated Girona with a 5-0 victory. New signing Tajon Buchanan scored a hat-trick in a stunning performance. The loss leaves Girona bottom of the table after two consecutive defeats to start the season.
Real Sociedad staged an impressive comeback to draw 2-2 with Espanyol after trailing by two goals at halftime. Osasuna earned a 1-0 win over Valencia thanks to an early goal from Ante Budimir.
