Real Madrid won 2-0 against Villarreal in La Liga on Saturday, thanks to Fede Valverde’s and Vinicius Junior’s goals.
The win allowed Real Madrid to rebound from their first defeat since January and keep pace with league leaders Barcelona. Valverde’s deflected shot and Vinicius’s powerful strike created a four-point gap between Real Madrid and third-placed Villarreal, who put up a strong fight but fell short.
However, the triumph was overshadowed by a late injury to defender Dani Carvajal, who had to leave the field on a stretcher. “It seems a serious knee injury,” remarked Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti. He added that the team felt concerned, attributing such injuries to the demanding schedule.
Ancelotti also mentioned that Vinicius would undergo medical tests for discomfort in his shoulder and neck. Despite these setbacks, Kylian Mbappe started the game, having recovered from a thigh injury. Although France did not select him for the upcoming Nations League fixtures, Mbappe’s presence was subdued as Madrid clinched a determined win.
Real Madrid played without Toni Kroos, who was in a spectator box. The match saw Valverde open the scoring 14 minutes in, with his long-range effort deflecting off a Villarreal player and eluding the goalkeeper. Villarreal responded strongly, with Nicolas Pepe nearly scoring with a header that hit the crossbar.
Mbappe showed flashes of his pace but was thwarted by Villarreal’s goalkeeper in one of his key attempts. The second half also saw controversy, with Villarreal calling for a penalty, but the play was ruled offside.
Vinicius later scored a spectacular goal from outside the box, sealing Madrid’s win. In stoppage time, Carvajal’s injury occurred as he tried to clear the ball, leading Valverde to remark on Real Madrid TV, “In the end, the result’s a less important thing Dani’s health is what matters.”
