Prime Minister’s Adviser Rana Sanaullah has denied recent media reports. He dismissed claims that PML-N President Nawaz Sharif wants to stop the government from notifying the new Chief of Defence Forces (CDF).
Sanaullah clarified the party leadership’s position in an exclusive Monday interview with media. He stated that Nawaz Sharif never suggested halting the CDF appointment. “People are linking his statements to this matter unnecessarily,” Sanaullah said. “He made those remarks in a different context that day.”
The senior PML-N leader confirmed that Nawaz Sharif, as party president, consented to all recent constitutional amendments. He stressed the importance of the new CDF institution, calling it “very important.”
Sanaullah outlined the next procedural steps. He explained that officials must carefully follow the proper legal sequence. “First comes the Constitution, then the law, and after the law, we frame the rules. We must handle all these things with caution,” he said.
He confirmed that the CDF’s five-year term will start on the notification date. The adviser stated the government will issue the notification after the prime minister returns to the country.
Sanaullah also criticised the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for its approach. He accused the party of choosing “threats and protests” over dialogue. Separately, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar addressed the public speculation. He dismissed rumours about problems with appointing Field Marshal Asim Munir as the CDF.
“I think genuine news is scarce these days. People are spreading unnecessary rumours for no reason,” Tarar told Geo News outside Parliament. The Law Minister noted that previous legislation already protects Field Marshal Munir’s tenure. He called the new amendment “ancillary legislation” and assured everyone that a brief delay in notification would not cause legal problems.
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif’s Sunday comments. He also urged people to stop speculating, confirmed the start of the process, and said the government would complete it upon the prime minister’s return. Field Marshal Asim Munir is currently the Chief of Army Staff (COAS). The government will appoint him as the first CDF, a new post created by the 27th Constitutional Amendment.
