Raja Haider Farooq has elected as the Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

A session of AJK Legislative Assembly was convened by Speaker Shah Ghulam Qadir to induct the newly-elected parliamentarians, and to select the new leader of the house. The session was called by President Sardar Muhammad Yaqoob Khan.

Farooq, is from the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N), was elected as the Prime Minister after securing 38 out of 48 votes.

The other candidates Chaudhry Muhammad Yaseen of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Dewab Ghulam Mohiuddin who was the joint candidate of the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) and the Muslim Conference secured five votes each.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif called the newly-elected Prime Minister of AJK and expressed his congratulations and good wishes. Farooq who is also the President of PML-N in AJK was named for the coveted office of AJK Prime Minister after the party swept the recent elections.

This is the second term for Raja Haider Farooq who was the AJK Prime Minister from October 2009 to July 2010. He belongs to a well-known political family as his father Raja Muhammad Haider Khan was the former President of the Muslim Conference, while his mother Ms. Saeeda Khan was the first women to be a member of the AJK Legislative Assembly.
