Punjab Police, in a move to modernize their community engagement, invited renowned transgender dancer Mehak Malik to be the chief guest at a ceremony honouring police martyrs in Toba Tek Singh.
However, the decision to invite Malik sparked widespread debate on social media. Critics questioned the appropriateness of her role in such a solemn event, suggesting that figures such as teachers, professors, or relatives of martyrs might have been more suitable guests.
Social media user Har Ahmed criticized the decision as overly progressive and inappropriate for the occasion, highlighting a perceived double standard in police interactions with public events.
Other users like Usman echoed the sentiment, expressing surprise that no academic or familial representative of the martyred officers was considered for the honour.
Meanwhile, Nazia Goraya pointed out the symbolic reconciliation between the transgender community and the police, which was underscored by Malik’s speech condemning attempts to sow discord between the two groups.
During her speech, Malik vowed to thwart any divisive efforts and concluded the ceremony with prayers for both the police martyrs and transgender individuals lost to violence in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Including a cultural figure like Malik has ignited a broader discussion on representation and the roles of various community members in honouring national heroes.
