The Punjab free transport petrol price hike relief package has been introduced to support citizens following a sharp increase in fuel prices across Pakistan.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif announced that public transport services will be free for passengers across all cities in Punjab as part of a broader relief initiative. Under the new policy, major public transport systems are now free. These include the Orange Line, Metro Bus, Speedo buses, and Green Electric Buses.
Authorities say the move aims to ease the financial burden on daily commuters and encourage the use of public transport during the ongoing fuel crisis. The relief package comes after a significant increase in petroleum prices. Petrol now costs Rs458.40 per litre, following a Rs138 per litre hike.
The relief package follows a steep increase in petroleum prices announced at the federal level.
- Petrol price has surged to Rs 458.40 per litre, after a Rs 138 per litre hike.
- The diesel price has climbed to Rs520.35 per litre, up from Rs184.
These sharp hikes have sparked widespread concern over rising living costs, inflation, and transport expenses for workers, students, and small business owners who rely on daily commuting.
In response to the fuel price shock, the Federal Government has also announced free public transport in Islamabad for 30 days (one month). This measure applies to federal capital routes and is intended to complement provincial relief efforts such as Punjab’s free transport initiative.
Similarly, diesel prices have risen by Rs184 per litre, reaching Rs520.35 per litre. These increases have raised concerns about rising living costs and inflation. The Punjab government has also announced targeted subsidies for key sectors. Farmers will receive a diesel subsidy of Rs 100 per litre to support agricultural activities.
Meanwhile, registered motorcycle owners will benefit from a petrol subsidy of Rs100 per litre on up to 20 litres. These measures are designed to assist both commuters and those dependent on fuel for livelihoods. Officials said the relief package aligns with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s national austerity and savings program.
Maryam Nawaz emphasised that providing relief remains a priority despite economic challenges. She urged citizens to rely more on public transport during this period.
The fuel price hike has drawn criticism from political leaders. Jamaat-e-Islami chief Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman described the increase as a “petrol bomb” on the public.
