In light of escalating instances of child sexual abuse, the Punjab government has announced an unprecedented initiative to educate students about sexual abuse incidents across the province, including Lahore. This step emerges as a crucial strategy in combatting the increasing violence targeted towards minors.
The Department of School Education has disseminated these directives to educational authorities across all districts. As per the notification, students must be made aware of this issue. Educators and school administrators are tasked with delivering informative lectures aiming to prevent violence against children.
A Comprehensive Education and Awareness Program
In this endeavour, children will be provided knowledge on how to avoid suspicious individuals and incidents of sexual harassment, as mentioned in the department’s notification. Concurrently, a systematic effort will be made to collect information about violence against minors from students across the province.
The Grim Statistics of Child Sexual Abuse
In light of the increasing instances of child sexual exploitation, a report by the Punjab home department earlier this month shed light on some disturbing trends. From January to mid-June 2023, the province reported 1,390 cases of child abuse – an alarming figure that requires urgent attention and action.
The statistics revealed that 69% involved minor boys, while 31% involved minor girls. The identities of the perpetrators were equally disturbing: 55% were neighbours, 13% were relatives, and 32% were acquaintances of the victims.
Regarding the distribution of abuse cases by city, the report indicated Gujranwala registered the highest number of cases, with 220 reports. Rawalpindi and Lahore recorded the lowest numbers, with 69 and 89 cases, respectively. Other cities, such as DG Khan, Faisalabad, Multan, Bahawalpur, Sheikhupura, Sahiwal, and Sargodha, reported significant child sexual abuse cases.
