A 17-year-old boy was granted conditional bail just 15 hours following his arrest for a tragic incident in Pune, where his high-speed driving resulted in the deaths of two individuals. As part of the bail conditions, the teenager is required to assist the traffic police in Yerwada for 15 days, write an essay on road safety, undergo alcohol dependency treatment, and attend counselling sessions.
The minor, the son of a prominent realtor in Pune, was behind the wheel of a Porsche travelling at speeds reported to exceed 200 km per hour. The vehicle, which lacked number plates, collided with a motorcycle, instantly killing both riders, engineers, Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta, who were returning from a gathering with friends.
The crash occurred around 2:15 a.m. as the teenager returned from a pub where he celebrated clearing his Class 12 exams with friends. In response to a complaint from a friend of one of the victims, police registered an FIR under sections related to death by negligence and rash driving. The ongoing investigation may also implicate the teenager’s father and the pub that served alcohol to the minors.
Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar reported that the police had requested the court to consider prosecuting the accused as an adult, given the severe nature of the crime. The police are planning to appeal the bail decision in the sessions court.
The incident has ignited considerable public anger, pointing to insufficient regulations concerning rash and underage driving. An Assistant Commissioner of Police is now leading a thorough investigation to strengthen the case against the young driver.
Commissioner Kumar confirmed that the minor was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, a fact supported by multiple eyewitness accounts of the teenager and his friends’ inebriated state.
