PubMatic filed a massive lawsuit against Alphabet’s Google. The company seeks billions in damages, claiming Google illegally controls the digital ad technology market. This control hurts publishers, advertisers, and the entire online community.
PubMatic’s lawsuit builds on a 2025 U.S. District Court ruling that found Google guilty of unfair practices in the ad tech industry. The case focuses on Google’s dominance over the “ad tech stack,” including tools like Google Ad Manager, which runs real-time ad auctions for websites. A 2023 Department of Justice case also held Google responsible for monopolising ad servers and exchanges, costing independent platforms billions in revenue.
PubMatic’s CEO, Rajeev Goel, stressed the need for fairness. “The court’s decision confirms what many have long believed: Google unfairly controls the ad market. This market should reward new ideas and support those creating content,” he said.
Google’s Alleged Unfair Practices
PubMatic accuses Google of several harmful actions:
- Locking Publishers In: Google combines its ad server and exchange tools, such as DoubleClick and AdX, to prevent publishers from using other platforms.
- Controlling Ad Transactions: By managing both buying and selling sides of ads, Google allegedly raises prices and cuts publisher earnings.
- Blocking Competitors: Google uses its power to push out rival companies, limiting their ability to compete.
Digital ads are a key part of the internet, generating billions of dollars yearly. Google’s ad tech business earns about $30 billion annually by placing ads on websites. The 2025 court ruling against Google’s control over ad servers and exchanges opened the door for lawsuits like PubMatic’s.

This case follows Google’s 2024 antitrust loss over its search engine dominance. These legal battles show a growing effort by the government to challenge big tech companies, which could affect firms like Amazon and Apple.

The lawsuit is now in the remedy phase. Possible outcomes include large fines for Google or forcing the company to sell off ad tech tools like DoubleClick or AdX. PubMatic’s case pushes for a fairer ad market that supports innovation and openness.
As the case moves forward, it could change how digital ads work. It may create more room for independent platforms and make the ad market clearer for publishers and advertisers. The results could also guide how regulators handle tech monopolies in the future.
