The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has called off its anticipated public rally at Islamabad’s Parade Ground, slated for April 6. In a recent X post, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan attributed the cancellation to Laylat-ul-Qadr considerations during Ramadan’s last ten days.
Khan also appealed for prayers for the freedom and safety of PTI affiliates, including founder Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi.
Previously, PTI aimed to demonstrate strength at the Parade Ground by advocating for Imran Khan’s release. Khan has been incarcerated since August on various charges, including corruption and disclosing state secrets.
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) had approved the rally, emphasizing the right to assembly after PTI’s petition.
The decision to cancel followed IHC’s suspension of sentences for Khan and Bushra Bibi in the Toshakhana case, marking a significant legal victory for PTI.
IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq announced the appeal against their conviction would proceed post-Eid holidays.
In January, Accountability Court Judge Muhammad Bashir sentenced the couple to 14 years with additional fines totalling Rs1.57 billion and disqualified Imran Khan for a decade.
