On July 28, 2025, the opposition in the Punjab Assembly appealed to Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi to intervene in Anti-Terrorism Courts (ATCs) proceedings for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers, workers, and supporters in the May 9 cases. The letter highlighted alleged violations that denied fair trials, in violation of Article 10-A of the Constitution.
The letter sent by the opposition in the Punjab Assembly, representing PTI, urged Chief Justice Afridi to address “serious breaches” in the trial processes. Riaz informed journalists that PTI members were denied their constitutional right to a fair trial. He emphasised that even the lawyers did not have enough time to prepare, which violated the principles of due process.

The opposition called for a judicial commission to investigate the May 9 cases and to permit media coverage for greater transparency. Riaz stated, “No PTI leader or worker was given a fair opportunity for legal defence.”
Alleged Violations and Unfair Practices
The letter stated that the ATCs rejected bail pleas without conducting proper hearings and disregarded evidence. Riaz commented, “What to speak of PTI leaders, even their lawyers were not given adequate time.” He argued that this violates Article 10-A, which guarantees the right to a fair trial. The opposition characterised the situation as a “black day for justice,” emphasising the violations of constitutional rights.
The riots that occurred on May 9, 2023, were triggered by the arrest of Imran Khan. Supporters of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) targeted various sites, including Jinnah House. Currently, over 100 PTI members are facing charges, and recent sentences, such as Malik Ahmed Khan Bhachar’s 10-year term, have been handed down.

The PTI claims that the actions taken against its members are politically motivated. The ongoing appeal could lead to Supreme Court scrutiny, which may influence the outcomes of the May 9 cases. This situation highlights the PTI’s call for accountability amidst ongoing trials.
