The federal government has reduced the customs value for used smartphones, leading to a sharp cut in PTA taxes on high-end mobile phones, including the Apple iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Sources said the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority calculates mobile registration taxes based on customs value, sales tax, and mobile levy. With the customs value now reduced, the overall PTA tax burden has also fallen.
Under the revised structure, users registering an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max through a passport will now pay PKR 55,000 in PTA tax. Registration through a National Identity Card will cost PKR 70,000.
The reduction marks a major relief for consumers. Previously, these flagship models carried significantly higher PTA taxes, making legal registration expensive and discouraging many buyers.

Market experts believe the move will support legitimate mobile phone usage and boost activity in the local smartphone market. They say lower taxes will encourage legal registration and reduce reliance on smuggled or unregistered devices.
Analysts also note that smartphone prices in Pakistan have moved closer to international levels following the decision. They view this shift as a positive step toward wider adoption of digital services and improved market transparency.
